The closing date for this position is November 10, 2009. The rate of pay for this position is $60.00 per day during training. During student training trips and thereafter, compensation rate set by existing union contract.
AS OF JUNE 1, 2009, AMTRAK EMPLOYEES WHO WORK ON TRAINS CROSSING THE CANADIAN BORDER MUST HAVE A WESTERN HEMISPHERE TRAVEL INITIATIVE (WHTI) COMPLIANT DOCUMENT. MUST HAVE A VALID: US. PASSPORT, or US PASSPORT CARD, or OTHER WHTI DOCUMENT SUCH AS: Trusted Traveler Cards (NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST), State Issued Enhanced Driver's License (when available), Enhanced Tribal Cards (when available), Native American Tribal Photo Identification Card, or Form I-872 American Indian Card.
Summary of Duties:
Position will cover both Service Attendant (Waiter Diner) and Train Attendant (Coach and Sleeping car) positions. Responsible for ensuring a safe, comfortable and pleasant journey to our coach and sleeping car passengers. The Train Attendant can work either coach or sleeping cars. Coach Attendants will be required to keep assigned coaches clean for the duration of the trip, including maintenance of all restrooms. Sleeping Car Attendants will be required to offer passengers all first-class amenities, make beds, change linens and keep restroom and shower area clean and sanitary for the duration of the trip. Must be willing to give special assistance to elderly and disabled passengers who are boarding and detraining. Will be responsible for assisting passengers who are boarding/detraining, including assistance with baggage. Perform dining car service and side work as directed by the Lead Service Attendant by providing a quality dining car experience for guests in a safe, efficient and professional manner. Must load/unload supplies and maintain an inventory of supplies. Must be available to work flexible schedules that include weekends and holidays.
Education:
Must have a high school education or equivalent. Prefer two years college, or food service industry training, or training in transportation fields.
Work Experience:
Must have two years food and beverage handling experience. Prefer cash handling and customer contact experience as well as experience in housekeeping.
Other Requirements:
Position will work long hours, most of it standing, applicant will be expected to adapt to frequently changing conditions, work cooperatively with other on-board personnel. To be successful applicant must arrive at work on time, cope with unforeseen events and sometimes work under stressful conditions. Work environment includes exterior work (15%) and interior work (85%) with high to medium noise levels, lighting of various degrees, floors of carpet/metal, moderate heat/cold, and constant swaying/rocking motion day or night. Work away from home up to 3-6 days, rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, odd days or shifts, accept authority, accept frequent layoffs and recalls. Must wear company provided uniform, comply with company grooming policies and be able to deal with stress, be calm and composed at all times. Must be at least 21 years of age due to service of alcoholic beverages.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
Must have good written and oral communications skills and positive attitude.
